Aatos Syrjala

February 4, 1918 — December 3, 2003

Aatos "Bill" Syrjala, age 85 formerly of Covington passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, where he has been a resident for the past five years.

He was born February 4, 1918 in Watton, MI son of the late William and Hulda (Lepola) Syrjala. Bill lived in Watton most all of his life. He was in the US Army during WWII from July 1942 until Oct. 1945. Bill then went to work for Budd Wheel in Detroit for a short time before returning to Watton. He worked for the Rail Road lining track for many years. Bill was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Covington and the VFW Post 8945 of Covington. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Bill is survived by his niece and nephews, Marilyn Wideman of Sterling Heights, MI, Lee (Gail) Mattson of Negaunee, and Myron (Joanne) Mattson of Ishpeming and their families; and several cousins. He is preceded in death by his sister Beatrice Mattson.

Committal prayers and area Veterans military rites will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 10:00 a.m. at the Covington Twp. Cemetery. Rev. Mark Reinsch will officiate. At request of the family a memorial funeral service will take place in the spring at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Memorial may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Covington. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
