Aimo J. Hulkkonen, age 86, of Nisula, Michigan, passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit.
He was born April 11, 1921 in Nisula, Michigan son of Henry and Hilda (Juntunen) Hulkkonen. Aimo attended the local schools. During World War II he served 2 A½ years in the Army Air force. As a tech sergeant he was a flight engineer on AB.24 Bomber's. Hulkkonen saw action in the South Pacific and participated in 45 combat missions.
After the war he owned and operated the Hulkkonen Farm, a poultry and dairy operation, with his brothers, until retirement in 1997. He was best known as the "Egg Man" who would delivery eggs and fresh produce to the four county area. He married the former Ruth Kemppainen on January 22, 1949 in Pelkie. Aimo's hobbies were photography, gardening, planting sunflowers and delivering flowers to share with people.
Surviving are his children Charles (Judy) Hulkkonen of Nisula, Beverly Kunick of Hubbell, MI, Lynne (Michael) Cadeau of L'Anse, Carmen Harden of Alston; brothers Arthur (Mildred) Hulkkonen of Kaleva, MI, Edward (Shirley) Hulkkonen of Nisula; sisters Sylvia Curtin of Lake Linden, MI , Mildred Lampinen of Atlantic Mine; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death are his parents; wife Ruth; son-in-laws James Harden and Dale Kunick; brothers Toivo, Gunnard, Urho, Weikko, and Sulo; sisters Helmi Hospenthal and Linda PirhonenWade.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 9th from 6-8 pm at the Jacobson Funeral Home. The Baraga County Area Veterans will conduct military rites at 7:00 pm under the direction of the American Legion Post 444. The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 2:00 pm at the Alston Apostolic Church in Alston. There will be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Pallbearers will be the grandchildren Kenneth Hemmila Jr., Julie Hemmila, Chas, Jonathon, Zach, Tyler Hulkkonen, and Mike Cadeau. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
