Arvid Johnson, 87, of Baraga, went to be with the Lord, unexpectedly, on Saturday morning, June 16, 2007, at his home.
He was born April 5, 1920, in Baraga, to Victor & Mary (Osterland) Johnson and was a lifelong area resident.
Arvid served in the Army and was a WWII veteran. He was assigned to the 34th Infantry, Company I. He was involved in campaigns in North Africa and Italy and was wounded in action on February 5, 1944.
On July 1, 1964 he married the former Helen LaChapelle in Chassell.
Arvid was employed at Pettibone for several years. He was an avid hunter, loved watching birds and enjoyed animals.
He is survived by his wife Helen Johnson of Baraga; daughter, Cynthia Curry of Hubbell; step-son, Gary (Diane) Maki of Aura; sisters, Elsie Soli and Viv Barda, both of Baraga; nieces, Mary Jo Williams of L'Anse and Joyce Krokocki of Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Irene Petersen, Zenia Johnson and Marie Elfers; and a brother, Rudy Johnson, who was killed in action on August 19, 1944 in Germany.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2007 at 11 a.m. in the Jacobson Funeral Home with Pastor Judy Mattson officiating. Interment will be in the Baraga Cemetery. The Baraga County Area Veterans under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post 444 will conduct military honors at the cemetery.
