Arvid M. Narhi, 92, of Pelkie, died Thursday, July 12, 2007, at his home in the house where he was born. He was born July 6, 1915 in Pelkie, son of the late Henry and Hilda (Pasanen) Narhi.
He served our country in the US Army as part of the Coast Guard Artillery Air Force during WWII in Australia and New Guinea. Arvid married the former Gladys Campbell on January 26, 1946 in Chicago, IL; upon being married they moved to the Narhi family farm in Pelkie where they farmed together. Along with being a farmer Arvid was a saw filer for the local forestry products sawmills for many years.
Arvid was a Life Member of the Alston VFW Post 7646 and a member of Copper Country Farm Bureau. He served on the Baraga Twp. Trustees for 16 years; Copper Country Dairy Board of Directors; and the Settlers Cooperative Dairy Board of Directors.
Preceding him in death is his wife Gladys on June 15, 2004; son Mickey; brothers Wilho and Emil; sisters Gertrude Syria, Martha Stanfield, and Hilda Taaffee.
Arvid is survived by his children Sally Narhi of Pelkie, Terry Narhi of Menominee, WI, Rae Marie (Michael) Klobucher of Engadine, MI; sister Siiri Bjerkness of Novi, MI; grandchildren A.J. Narhi of Pelkie, JoAnn Marie Klobucher & Michael Klobucher of Engadine, MI; and many cousins.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, July 16 at 11:00 am at the Grace Free Lutheran Church in Pelkie; Pastor Dean Franz will officiate. Visitation will be on Sunday from 6-8:00 pm at the Grace Free Lutheran Church and on Monday one hour prior to the service at the church. The Baraga County Area Veterans will conduct military rites at 7:00 pm Sunday, under the direction of the American Legion Post 444. Burial will be in the Pelkie Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Grace Free Lutheran Church or Baragaland Senior Citizens Center. The Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse is assisting the family
