Charles G. Monson

Charles G. Monson, age 81, a former resident of L'Anse, passed away on Monday, January 28, 2002 at Marquette General Hospital, where he had been a patient for a few days. Charles had been a resident of The Bluffs Senior Living in Houghton for the past year.

Charles was born on June 9, 1920 in L'Anse, the son of Freemon and Ellen (Rohlin) Monson. He graduated from L'Anse High School. Charles enlisted in the Coast Guard and served with the U.S. Navy during WWII. He married Thelma Gauthier on January 21, 1954 in Dubuque, IA. They lived in Milwaukee for many years, moving to L'Anse in 1977. He worked for Greyhound as a bus driver for more than 30 years. Charlie has been a resident of The Bluffs senior living in Houghton for the past year.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Past President of Baraga County Kiwanis Club, a board member of the Baraga County Credit Union, a founding board member of the Baraga County Community Foundation, VFW Post 3897, American Legion Post 144, Baragaland Senior Citizens, and a volunteer at the Henry Ford Museum in Alberta. Charles enjoyed traveling, wood working, and making furniture.

Charles is survived by a daughter Ellen Heikkinen of L'Anse, four grandchildren, Scott (Jackie) Heikkinen of Marquette, Jason Heikkinen of L'Anse, Corey Heikkinen of L'Anse, Joel Heikkinen of Marquette, three great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Onnalee Monson of Wyandotte, MI, and numerous cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Thelma on January 14, 1999, and a brother Freemon R. Monson.

The funeral service will be on Friday, Feb. 1, at 1:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in L'Anse. Rev. David Snyder will officiate. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.. The Baraga Area Veterans will conduct a military service at 12:30 p.m. Burial will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery in the Spring. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is in charge of the arrangements.
