Dora Bernice Waisanen, age 88 of Hancock, MI passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Portage Point Nursing Home in Hancock, MI.
She was born October 15, 1925 in Aura, MI daughter to Matti and Hilma (Ahonen) Koski. Dora graduated from L'Anse High School and then married Carl Waisanen in 1942. The moved to Dollar Bay, MI in 1961 and she worked at Fashion Bug for about 15 years; retiring in 1986.
Dora was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Dollar Bay, and was involved with the Salvation Army and Little Brothers in Hancock. She loved to bake and was famous for her cheese cake. Dora enjoyed going out to eat, concerts, traveling, and being with her grandkids and visiting her family in Aura.
Surviving are her children, Dr. Calvin Waisanen of Ann Arbor, MI, Dr. Melvin (Terri) Waisanen of Jackson, MI, Heidi (Rick) Waligora of Lansdale, PA, daughter-in-law Carol Waisanen of Houghton; brother, Roy (Elia) Koski of Aura; sister, Irene Honkala of Shulstad's Leisure Living in Baraga, MI; 8 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents; husband Carl; son, David Waisanen; brothers, Albert, Walter, and Norman Koski; sisters, Helen Collins and Florence Nelson.
Her funeral service will be held on Friday, January 17th at 11:00 a.m.at the Jacobson Funeral Home with visitation for one hour prior to the service. Rev. Sally Wilke will officiate. A luncheon will follow the service in The Sharing Room at the funeral home. Burial will be in the spring in the Aura Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Carl & Dora Waisanen Memorial Fund at First Lutheran Church, 23415 Granite Ave, Dollar Bay, MI 49922.
