Earl K. LaFernier, 77, of Keweenaw Bay, died Friday afternoon, April 13, 2007, at his home, surrounded by his family, following a lengthy illness.
He was born March 18, 1930, in Keweenaw Bay, a son of the late Walter and Helen (Wesola) LaFernier and had been a lifelong area resident.
On May 16, 1953 he married the former Carol Velmer in the Sacred Heart Church in L'Anse.
Earl was employed by Snowdon and performed road work duties before his employment Celotex where he worked for 30 years.
He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Alaska.
Earl was a member of Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church at Assinins. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and remodeling his home.
He is survived by his wife, Carol LaFernier of Keweenaw Bay; children, Dale (Susan) LaFernier of Skandia, Kristine (Mike) Loftquist of L'Anse, Debra (Mark) Fuller of L'Anse, Robert (Janet) LaFernier of Tecumseh, MI, Kevin (Missy) LaFernier of Aura and Joe (Lynn) LaFernier of Baraga; 13 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth LaFernier and siblings, Leslie, Wilber, Stella, Mildred, Mervin and Ben.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 16, 2007 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse. The Baraga County Area Veterans will perform military honors at 7 p.m. followed by a parish prayer service. Visitation will also be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 from 10 to 11 a.m. in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Baraga. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. in the church with Rev. George Maki officiating. Interment will be in the Assinins Cemetery.
