Elma Emelia Wertanen
September 9, 1922 — January 11, 2009
Elma E. Wertanen, age 86, of Baraga, Michigan passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2009 at Bayside Village in L'Anse.
She was born September 9, 1922 in Pelkie, MI daughter to the late Oscar and Sofie (Raja)Hill. Elma grew up in Pelkie and attended school there; she resided in Baraga for the past 30 years. She was married to Ted Wertanen; he preceded her in death.
Elma was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Baraga. She enjoyed needle work, latch hooks, and playing cards.
Surviving are her sons Raymond (Lorraine) Maki of Baraga, Robert Maki of L'Anse; daughters Joyce Burke of Cuba, Missouri, Norma (John) Osterman Cocoa, Florida; 8 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her brothers Willard and John Hill; sisters Edna Pesonen, Saida Phytila, and Elsie Hill.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 16th at 11:00 a.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Rev. John Autio will officiate. Burial will be in the spring in the Pelkie Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse is in charge of arrangements.
