Elsie Impi Keranen

February 17, 1912 — September 25, 2005

Elsie Impi Keranen, 93, a former Baraga resident, passed away at Bayside Village in L'Anse, on Sunday morning, September 25, 2005, where she had been a resident the past 7 A½ weeks following a 9 month stay at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming, MI.

She was born February 17, 1912, in Covington, MI, to the late Thomas and Lempi (Pikkumaki) Manninen. She attended the Covington Township Public Schools and had been employed by the Howes Hotel and a local store.

Elsie married Einar Jackson on July 20, 1929 in Republic, MI, they lived in the Covington area and he preceded her in death on August 19, 1950. On July 9, 1960 in Elo, MI she married Arthur Keranen of Mass City where they resided, farmed and logged. In 1984 they moved to the Baraga Senior Housing. Arthur passed away on December 7, 1988.

She was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Covington where she had served as president of the Ladies Aid for several years, a 3rd degree member of the Kaleva Ladies Ainontupa #13, Baragaland Senior Citizens and the Covington Township Historical Society.

Elsie loved visiting with people, knitting, doing word puzzles, watching Suomi Kutsuu and baking, especially bread.

She is survived by a son, John Jackson of Mass City, MI; daughter, Helen (James) Lepola of Watton, MI; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Donald Manninen of Covington and Clarence Fred Manninen of Champion; nieces, nephews and cousins; daughter-in-law, Maria Jackson of Iron River, MI; son-in-law, Glenn Getzloff of Wilson, MI; sisters-in-law, Viola Manninen of Covington, MI, Elsa Robb of Ontonagon, MI and Eleanor Keranen of Kalkaska, MI. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, son, Arvo Jackson, daughter, Ruth Jackson Getzloff, a grandson, granddaughter and great-granddaughter, 3 brothers, John, Werner and Arne Manninen and 3 nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 7, 2005 at 1 p.m. in the Bethany Lutheran Church in Covington with Rev. Leon Linquist officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service. The Ladies of Kaleva will conduct a prayer service at 12:30 p.m. Interment will be in the Covington Cemetery.
