Erling J. Peterson, age 87, of Skanee passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2002 in L'Anse.
Erling was born July 21, 1914 in Steigen, Norway son of Peter and Kristine (Andreassen) Olsen. He came to America and became a United States Citizen in 1930. Erling was in the US Army in 1943. He married the former Marie Paulson on May 8, 1943. They lived in Detroit for 11 years. He worked as an industrial engineer for Federal Mogul and Rockwell. In 1958 they moved to Skanee. He then worked as a foreman at Celotex for seven years. After Marie's passing he returned to Detroit with his two youngest children and worked for Mechanical Handling Systems in Warren, MI, and later for the parent company American Chain and Cable Co., where he achieved his certification as a manufacturing engineer. He retired from ACCO in 1979 at age 65 and returned to Skanee.
Erling was involved in many community activities. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church where he was a former council member. Erling was also a recent Arvon Twp. Supervisor. He was an avid outdoors man and enjoyed logging and hunting.
He is survived by his three children, Marilyn (Raymond) Prill of Washington, MI, Christine (Joseph) Gordon of Caledonia, MI, Daryl (Lisa) Peterson of Macomb Twp., MI; half sister Ruth Wilhelmsen of Norway; step sister Helen Duncan of Minnesota; seven grandchildren, Veronica (Gary) Heikkinen, Vicki ( Darrell) Sanders, Jodi (Steve) Sikma, Marc (Valerie) Gordon, Melissa, Janna, and Kristen Peterson; three great grandchildren, Tessa and Joseph Sikma, and Samuel Gordon.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marie on June 30, 1963, as well as several brothers and sisters in the United States and Norway.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 15, at 11:00 a.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home. Visitation will be on Friday from 6-8:00 p.m., and Saturday one hour prior to the service at Jacobson Funeral Home. Pastor Judy Mattson will officiate. The luncheon and fellowship will follow the service in The Sharing Room at Jacobson Funeral Home. The burial will then take place in the Skanee Cemetery.
