Francis L. "Monk" Campeau, 93, of L'Anse, died Wednesday evening, December 13, 2006, at Bayside Village.

He was born May 28, 1913, in Hubbell, Michigan, a son of the late Patrick and Delima (King) Campeau.

Francis was a WWII veteran and served as a cook in the army. Following the service he worked as a cook in various logging and hunting camps. He was also employed for several years as a sawyer in the lumber mills and later worked for the Whittum and Jacobson Funeral Home.

Francis had various interests. He enjoyed photography and the developing of pictures, microscopic imaging artistry, made wood carvings of animals and building model ships. He hunted, trapped was an avid fisherman and spent a lot of time living in the woods when he was young. Francis was skilled at taxidermy. He also made his own fly's and lures for fishing.

He also played the string and steel guitar along with his brother-in-law, Joseph Marinich, Sr., who played the accordion, at many functions. Francis was famous for his wine making, which he had done for many years. He loved to garden and had his own garden at his residence at Greenhill Manor until the time of his death.

He was a member of the L'Anse VFW #3897 and the DAV.

Francis is survived by a brother, Paul (Elsie) Campeau of Belding, MI; a sister, Loretta Cote of Swannanoa, NC; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Lawrence, Bernard, Hubert, Ray, Annabell, Agnes and Mary.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2006 at 3 p.m. in the Jacobson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held in the funeral home for one hour prior to the service. The Baraga County Area Veterans under the direction of the Baraga American Legion #444 will perform military honors at the funeral home. Interment will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery.
