Fred J. Lahti

Fred J. Lahti, age 86, of Bovine passes away on Saturday, April 19, 2003 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

Fred was born January 25, 1917 in Crystal Falls, MI son of the late Fred and Amanda (Paloniemi) Lahti. He grew up in Herman. Fred married Irja Autio on September 25, 1937 in Montana, where Fred did woods work and also worked in the mines. They moved to Iron River and he continued mining. In 1945 they moved back to the Herman at which time he worked as a woodsman for various loggers and also with the railroad. Fred worked at Celotex for 19 A½ years, retiring from there in 1979.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2287 in L'Anse, and the Upper Peninsula Trappers Association. He enjoyed wood working, gardening, fishing, and hunting.

Fred is survived by his wife Irja of Bovine; two sons, Paul Lahti of L'Anse, Ken (Dottie) Lahti of Albert Lea, MN; daughter, Donna Lahti of Vestal, NY; six grandchildren, Kristi (Chuck) Johnson of Minneapolis, MN, Michael Lahti of Superior, WI, Tom (Sue) Brunet of L'Anse, Christine (Jim) Collins of L'Anse, Catherine Brunet of Marquette, Joan (Fred) Teddy of L'Anse; 9 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Lillian (Ray) Jolgren of Pelkie; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 22 at 11:00 a.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The Eagles will conduct a service at 10:30 a.m.. Rev. Margaret Grant will officiate. Burial will be in the Herman Cemetery. The pallbearers will be Michael Lahti, Chuck Johnson, Tom Brunet, Jim Collins, Fred Teddy, and Dennis Jolgren. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Herman Historical Society, Building Fund. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
