Fred W. Schwalm, 84, of Baraga and a former Pelkie resident passed away on Sunday, March 11, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital. He has been a resident patient of the Covington Rest Home since 1998.
He was born on May 19, 1916 in Laurium, a son to the late William and Lillian (Housa) Schwalm. Fred attended Baraga High School, Suomi College and Michigan Tech. On June 3, 1942 he married Aileen Kultala in Toledo, Ohio. Mr Schwalm was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army. He owned and operated a saw shop in Pelkie for 16 years retiring in 1977 and also was known for his furniture making and playing guitar.
Fred was a past member of the Methodist Church in Baraga, Baraga American Legion Post 444 and the D.A.V.
Surviving are his wife, Aileen: son Fred Schwalm, Jr. of Pelkie; a daughter, Karen Schwalm of Port McNiel, British Columbia, Canada, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Pelkie Cemetery.
The family is being assisted by the Sirard Funeral Home in Baraga.
