Garnett L. Schafer, age 105 passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Bayside Village in L'Anse.
She was born in Portland, Indiana, the daughter of Fred and Lillian May (Ward) Foltz. She graduated from Portland High School and Fort Wayne Business College. On September 2, 1929 she married William H. Schafer and they lived in Detroit, MI until his death in 1960.
She was employed as a legal secretary in Detroit until retiring in 1971. She moved to L'Anse and then worked as a part-time secretary for the Wittum and Jacobson Funeral Homes.
She taught herself to paint when she was in her late 80's; she quilted at United Lutheran Church for many years; and also knitted mittens for senior citizens and made diddy bags for the VA hospital.
Surviving her is one son, William F. (Eleanor) Schafer of Marshfield, WI, a grandson, Michael F. (Cheryl) Schafer of Mohawk, MI, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a local cousin Kathy (Raymond) Juetten of Pelkie. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Johnson and Georgia Cilpin.
She was a member of United Lutheran Church and the Baragaland Seniors.
Memorials may be made to the United Lutheran Church General Fund or the charity of your choice.
Burial will be in the Glen Eden Lutheran Cemetery in Livonia, MI. The Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse is in charge of arrangements.
