George "Joe" Maki

George "Joe" Maki, age 84 of Pelkie, passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Maki was born May 17, 1917 in Pelkie, son of Andrew and Hilda (Saarberg) Maki. He married the former Taimi Johnson on June 25, 1943 in Pelkie. He was a Staff Sgt. in the US Army, during WWII, where he was a radar repairman. Mr. Maki was a dairy farmer, and worked as a postal clerk at the US Post Office in Pelkie, retiring in 1978.

He was a member of the Mission United Lutheran Church, the church choir, and parish council; A.S.C. committee; Baraga County Soil Conservation Board; BCMH board; Doelle Senior Citizens; VFW Post 7646 of Alston; Pelkie CO-OP board. He held numerous offices in many of these organizations.

He is survived by his wife Taimi of Pelkie; son Daniel (Ardys) Maki of Ahmeek, MI; daughter Mary Jo (Michael) Wiggen of Minneapolis, MN; sister Julia Morrison of Ironwood; two grandchildren, Elise Wiggen, and Joel Maki; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Maki is preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Louis, Eino, Waino, Wilho, Carl, and Armas Maki; two sisters, Linda Maki, and Laina Maki.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Mission United Lutheran Church.

The funeral service will be on Friday, July 27, at 11:00 a.m. at Mission United Lutheran Church in Pelkie. Visitation will be on Thursday from 6-8:00 p.m. at Mission United Lutheran Church, and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. The VFW Post 7646 of Alston will conduct military rites at 7:30 p.m.. Rev. Michael Laakko will officiate. Burial will be in the Pelkie Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is in charge of arrangements.
