George "Glen" Sands, 85, of L'Anse, died Thursday morning, December 1, 2005, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born September 11, 1920, in L'Anse, a son of the late Peter and Katherine (Meville) Sands and has been a lifelong area resident. Glen was a 1938 L'Anse High School graduate and received the distinguished alumni award in 1998.
He was a WWII veteran, having served in the Navy from 1942 to 1945. On June 8, 1946 he married the former Ruth LeDuc in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in L'Anse. Glen was employed by the Village of L'Anse for 30 years as a clerk and village manager. He retired in 1982.
Glen was an active member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, the church choir and choral clubs and served as a volunteer fireman for the L'Anse Fire Department and founding director of the Golden Eagles Drum & Bugle Corps. In his retirement Glen enjoyed celebrating life with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and sharing his talents for music, singing and creating Christmas villages for display.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruth "Sis" Sands, of L'Anse; sons, Glen Patrick (Susan) Sands of DePere, WI, Gary Michael Sands of Marquette and William Peter (Karin) Sands of Green Bay, WI; daughters, Katherine Mary Marchi of Green Bay, Mary Flora Sands of Cleveland, WI, Anne Therese (Steven) Koski of L'Anse and Carol Marie (Mark) Elmblad of St. Ignace, MI; 20 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren with 2 more expected soon. He was preceded in death by his brothers, William, Robert and Mark Sands and sisters, Lillian Mooney, Thelma Dunn, Adele Kelhofer, Clara Halpin, Anna Schellinger, Mildred Daust and Margaret Molloy and a son-in-law, Mark Marchi.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 4, 2005 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Jacobson Funeral Home. A parish prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. followed by the Baraga Area Veterans at 7:30 p.m. and Knights of Columbus at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 5, 2005 at 11 a.m. in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church with Rev. Augustine George officiating. Visitation will also be held on Monday, in the church, for one hour prior to the mass. Interment will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery in the spring.
Mr. Sands' grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
