George Schoenneman, 85, of L'Anse, died Friday afternoon, November 10, 2006 at Marquette General Hospital.
He was born May 14, 1921, in Detroit, the son of George and Mabel (Allen) Schoenneman. George was a graduate of Cooley High School in Detroit. On February 27, 1943 he married the former Winifred Voss in Rosedale Gardens, MI.
George sailed the great lakes as a wheelsman with Pittsburgh Steamship Company. He then attended Ft. Trumble Officer's Training School in New London, Connecticut and joined the Maritime Service. He was promoted to Lieutenant and sailed around the world delivering supplies to the US Armed Forces. George was later assigned to a hospital ship, bringing wounded service men and women back to the United States.
Following the war he joined the Plymouth Fire Department for which he served 32 years. George attended numerous special firefighting classes at the University of Michigan and Southern Methodist University in Texas for administrative training. He was promoted to Fire Chief in 1964 and retired in 1979.
George enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening and woodworking projects and took great pride in maintaining his home and yard. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather and had a keen sense of humor.
He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, the International Fire Chief's Association and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Winifred Schoenneman of Pequaming; son, David; daughter, Anne Marie; and two granddaughters, Suzanne and Michelle. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Dorothy and an infant sister.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 14, 2006 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Jacobson Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home with Rev. George Maki officiating. Interment will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery. The Baraga County Veterans under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post will conduct military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association or the Cancer Society.
