Gertrude I. Syria, age 88 of Baraga passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Cobertown, Michigan on February 3, 1914 daughter to the late Henry and Hilda (Pasanen) Narhi. Gertrude grew up in Pelkie. She moved to Detroit where she was a domestic worker. She married Elias Syria on February 10, 1940 in Detroit. After Elias retired, they moved to Tawas, MI where they resided for over 20 years. In 1995 she moved to Hancock where she resided until 1999 when she moved to Baraga.

Gertrude was a member of Rosicrucian Order A.M.O.R.C., Thebes Lodge, in Detroit, and the Baragaland Senior Citizens. She enjoyed needle crafts. Gertrude was very involved with her Finnish Heritage and kept in contact with her relatives in Finland. She traveled to Finland several times to visit relatives.

She is survived by a brother Arvid (Gladys) Narhi of Pelkie; sister Siiri (Ruben) Bjerkness of Farmington Hill, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gertrude is preceded in death by her husband Elias; brothers Wilho and Emil Narhi; sisters Martha Stanfield and Hilda Taaffee.

Funeral services for Gertrude will be held on Saturday, October 4, at 11:00 a.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home. Pastor Dean Franz will officiate. The visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Fellowship and a luncheon will follow in the Sharing Room located at the funeral home.
