H. Wendell Oliver, age 85 of Skanee passed away on Monday, April 8, 2002 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital skilled nursing unit.
He was born July 9, 1916 in Sturgis, Kentucky, son of the late Hewlett and Mary Exie (Mitchell) Oliver. He grew up in Kentucky. He married the former Opal Neveline Sizemore on June 25, 1939, she preceded him in death on June 17, 1975. Wendell worked for Chrysler Corporation as an auto worker for 13 years, then worked for the postal service as an officer in charge for 10 years in Anchorville, MI. He moved to Skanee in 1977. Wendell loved reading, gardening, bowling, and hunting. He was a member of the Ottawa Sportsman Club.
Wendell is survived by two daughters, Carol Sue (Peter ) Cobb of Ocala, FL, Patricia (John) deGraffenreid of Westland, MI; a son James David (Carol) Oliver of Belding, MI; a long time companion and love of 25 years Betty V. Patterson of L'Anse, and her daughter Sheryl (Edward) Bullock of L'Anse, and her granddaughter Kristy (Joe) McCarthy of Marquette, and her great grandchildren Heather and Joseph; two sisters Katherine Leigh (Robert) Creek of North Adams, MI, Betty (Robert) Humphrey of Shepherdsville, Kentucky; 10 grandchildren, John Kennedy deGraffenreid, Dawn Marie deGraffenreid, Robert (Christina) Cobb, Linda (John) Sinacola, Nancy Cobb, Michael Cobb, Elizabeth Oliver, Jennifer Strey, James David Oliver, Rebecca Oliver; 2 great grandchildren, Garrett Oliver, Emilee R. Cobb.
He is preceded in death by a sister Anna Leggitt.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, April 12, at 11:00 a.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Visitation will be on Thursday from 6-8:00 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Friday. Rev. Larry Saunders will officiate. Burial will be in the Pequaming Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
