Harold Lyle Bennink

Harold Lyle Bennink, age 70 of Trout Creek, MI died Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at the family farm in Keweenaw Bay, MI.

Harold was born September 16, 1939 on the family farm in Keweenaw, MI son of Garrett and Lila Anne (Pirkola) Bennink. He graduated from Baraga High School in 1957. He was outstanding in sports and held the pole vaulting record for the UP Class D at one time; he played basketball and was on an all conference team; and he went to Boys State during his junior year. Harold went into the US Army from 1957-60 and returned to the family farm in Keweenaw Bay where he farmed.

In 1996 he moved to live with his sister in Ishpeming, MI and then they moved to Trout Creek in 2002 until the past couple of months where he resided in the Covington Rest Home. Harold loved farming. He was a member of the Stanley-Rajala Am Vets Post in Covington.

Surviving are his brothers Harm (Dianne) Bennink and Otto Bennink both of Baraga; sisters, Joyce Zipse of L'Anse, Priscilla (Frederick) Sliger of Trout Creek, and Janet Tembreull of Baraga; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceding him in death are his parents.

The funeral service for Harold will be held on Saturday, November 21, at 1:00 pm at the Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Rev. John Autio will officiate. Burial will be in the Keweenaw Bay Cemetery with the Baraga County Area Veteran conducting military rites under the direction of the American Legion Post #444.

Pallbearers will be his nephews, Harm Bennink, Brandon Van Buren, Ed Tembreull, Jimmer Tembreull, Steven Sliger, David Zipse, Greg Fish, and Duane Fish. The Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
