Harold Struble, 86, passed away on April 9, 2006, at the Columbia County Health Care Center in Wyocena, Wisconsin, where he had been a resident for the last 2 months.
He was born in Shepherd, Michigan, December 18, 1919, to Wilbur and Nina (Mecum) Struble. He attended the Shepherd Schools and graduated in 1937. On June 14, 1941 he married Edith Nichols.
Harold enlisted in the US Navy on December 8, 1943. He served as a Bugle Master in San Diego, CA and Corpus Christi, TX until his discharge in 1946.
He moved to L'Anse from Shepherd in 1965 to attend the MTU Ford Forestry Center in Alberta for training in forestry. Harold and Edith resided in L'Anse for 40 years. The moved to Portage, Wisconsin in 2004 to be near their son, Craig.
Harold was a master plasterer and was a plastering contractor in the Central Michigan area in the 40's, 50's and 60's. After moving to L'Anse, he worked at the MTU Ford Forestry Center in Alberta as a forestry technician.
In his youth, Harold was the leader of a swing band that played in the Central Michigan area. He was also a member of the Northland Gospel Trio in L'Anse.
He was a member of the American Legion, a member of the Church of Christ in Shepherd, MI and attended the Zeba Indian Mission United Methodist Church.
He was an avid "rock hound" in his retirement, traveling all over the United States to collect samples. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, lapidary, playing and listening to music, and stamp and coin collecting.
He is survived by his loving wife, Edith of Wyocena, WI; 4 children, Bonnie (Marty) Betz of Virginia Beach, VA, Sue (Tom) Weber of Enid, Oklahoma, Jim (Betty) Struble of Cedarville, MI and Craig (Sharon) of Wyocena, WI; grandchildren, Shawn Rooker, Paige Fashik, Heather Cheek, Nina Chronopolis, Joe Betz, Darren Struble, Joy Struble-Hedstrom, Peter Struble and Katie Struble; 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 13, 2006 at 11 a.m. in the Zeba Indian Mission United Methodist Church with Rev. John Henry officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service in the church. Interment will be in the Salt River Cemetery in Shepherd, Michigan at a later date.
