Hazel Tryphina Menge, 97, of L'Anse, died Sunday afternoon, July 3, 2005 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
She was born March 12, 1908, in Chassell, Michigan, a daughter of the late Frederick and Melissa (Barringer) Duncan. Hazel was a L'Anse High School graduate. On June 14, 1935 she married Ellis (Dick) Menge in Chicago, Illinois and he preceded her in death in 1988. Hazel was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Gretchel, and her sister, Ethel Hansen.
Hazel worked as a secretary for the superintendent at L'Anse High School, the Summit and Herman School's.
She was a member of the Temperance League, Eastern Star and a lifelong member of United Methodist Church where she played the organ for more than 25 years. Hazel enjoyed flowers, gardening, her grandchildren and her dog, Nikki.
She is survived by her two sons, Bill (Sandy) Menge and Thomas (Mary Frances) Menge, both of L'Anse; 7 grandchildren, Beth (Mark) Burwinkel of Mason, Ohio, Sara Menge of Big Rapids, MI, Bill T. (Kristie) Menge of L'Anse, Allison (Dustin) Carr of Green Bay, WI, Katie Menge of Walled Lake, MI, Jane (Jeff) DeVries of Rodney, MI and Peter Menge of Midland, MI; 5 great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Anna, Sarah, Adam and Emma; a nephew, Duncan (Linda) Hansen of L'Anse; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 6, 2005 from 6 to 8 pm in the Jacobson Funeral Home. An Eastern Star Service will take place at 7 pm in the funeral home. A funeral service will be on Thursday, July 7, 2005 at 11 am in the United Methodist Church with Rev. John Henry Officiating. Interment will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery.
Peter Menge, Jeff DeVries, Bill Menge, Mark Burwinkel, Dusty Carr and Ken Recor will serve as pallbearers.
