Helmer Einar Toyras, age 88 of Aura, MI passed away on Monday, November 10, 2014 suddenly at his home
He was born May 9, 1926 in Aura son of Matt A. and Sophia (Haapalehto) Toyras. Helmer grew up in Aura and attended the Aura School then graduated from L’Anse High School in 1945. After graduation Helmer helped his father on the family farm with milking cows and running the farm. In 1954 he went in the National Guard for 5 years. He married Pearl Sjoblom (Nygord) on September 1, 1957 in Chisholm, Minnesota. He was a devoted husband, loving father and friend. After retirement he and Pearl enjoyed traveling.
He owned Hoppy’s Bar in Kenton, MI for several years; and worked at Celotex for 30 years. Helmer also repaired sewing machines. He belonged to the Aura Lutheran Church.
Helmer was a wonderful fiddle player, taking part in the Aura Jamboree since the beginning, quit performing a few years ago. He was featured on Finland Calling several times over the years. In 1976 he was invited to Washington DC for the Country’s Celebration to play his violin.
Surviving are his wife Pearl Toyras in Bayside Village in L’Anse; daughter Robin (Donald) Carlisle of Aura; step son Wayne (Faye) Nygord of Aura; step daughter Pearl Joki of Chesterfield, MI; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother Matt Toyras Jr.; sisters, Helga Francis Kovich, Hulda Kokko, Hilda Saari, Helvie Gorinac, Gertrude Elmblad, Siiri Ollila, Sylvia Nelsen, and Signe Koski.
Visitation was on Saturday, Nov. 15th from 10-12:00 p.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Baraga County Area Veterans conducted military rites at 11:30 a.m. under the direction of American Legion Post 444. His funeral service was held at 12:00 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home with Rev. Judy Mattson officiating. A luncheon followed in the Sharing Room at the funeral home hosted by the Aura Auxiliary. Burial is in the Aura Cemetery.
