Helmi F Schultz

January 19, 1919 — March 14, 2002

Helmi F. Schultz, age 83 of Baraga, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2002 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital, skilled nurse unit. Helmi's life was a tribute to the ability of love and joy to overcome hardship.

She was born January 19, 1919 to Jafet and Maria Johanna (Huttunen) Keranen in Pelkie. Helmi graduated from Baraga High School in 1936. In 1943 while in Detroit, she married Daniel Schultz, the love of her life. They returned to the area in 1978.

After giving birth to her third child at age 28, Helmi was stricken with polio and was paralyzed from the waist down on her left side. In spite of being told she would never walk again, she not only walked but gave birth to nine more children. Helmi filled the home with love, music, and appreciation for each other. To meet Helmi, one would never know that she had a bad day in her life. Helmi always put the needs of others ahead of her own hardships. She remained the same kind, caring, unselfish person for her entire life.

Helmi is preceded in death by her parents; a brother Arthur Keranen; two infant children, Elaine and Thomas; daughter Nancy; and grandson Daniel J. Schultz III.

She is survived by Dan, her devoted husband of 58 years; sister Helen Hanson of Austin, TX; and brother Arvo (Rachel) Keranen of Baraga. She also is survived by children Daniel (Beverly) Schultz II of Virginia, MN, Florence (Russell) Frick of Clarkson, Ruth (Byrd) Kramer of Chassell, Raymond Schultz of Tapiola, Carl Schultz of Battle Creek; Bonnie Maiga of Carson City, Janet (Bernard) Witbrodt of Greenville, Joyce (Thomas) Bronson of Mansfield, PA, Rita (Robert) Dillenbeck of Clarkston; 24 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
