Helvi A. Heikkinen, age 83 of Covington, MI passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at the Hospice House of Holland in Holland, MI.
She was born on January 8, 1929 in Hancock, MI daughter to Matt and Anna (Rinne) Lahti. Helvi grew up in Keweenaw Bay and graduated from Baraga High School in 1947. She married Toivo Heikkinen on January 17, 1948 in Laurium, MI. They resided in Covington until two years ago when she moved to Holland, MI to be with her daughter.
Helvi was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and was a charter member of the Covington Historical Museum. She enjoyed playing scrabble, crossword puzzles, reading, sewing, and needle point. Helvi will be remembered for her sense of humor and was known as the neighborhood mom, for many enjoyed to stop and visit with her.
Surviving are her daughter Elaine (Ray) Johnson of Holland, MI; grandson Cory (Lisa) Johnson; great grandsons Nickolas and Nathan Johnson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents; husband Toivo in 2010; son Roger in 1987; infant daughter Caroline; brothers Waino, Wilho, Walter, and William Lahti; two infant sisters; and two infant brothers.
Visitation will be on Friday, May 25th from 6-8 pm at the Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse, MI; and on Saturday, May 26th from 10-11 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Watton, MI. Helvi's funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Rev. Mark Reinsch will officiate. Burial will be in the Covington Cemetery.
