Herman R. Tilson, age 82 of Watton, MI passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital in the skilled nurse unit.
He was born April 26, 1927 in Hockings County, Tennessee son of the late James and Flora (Lane) Tilson. Herman served in the US Army from 1945-46 during WWII and from 1949-58 during the Korean War. He married the former Fern Maki on January 7, 1953. He was a devoted husband and visited Fern daily in SNU since she resided there in September 2004. In 1959 they moved to Watton and worked for CCI in the Republic and Tilden Mines for over 30 years.
Herman was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Covington and the former Bethany Lutheran Church Council Chairman, the Covington Township Supervisor from 1964-1980, former UP Cattle Association Chairman, member of the Covington-Watton Lions Club, and member of the VFW Post #8945 in Covington. He enjoyed farming, raising beef cattle and cooking for pancake breakfasts at the VFW.
Surviving are his wife Fern Tilson of L'Anse, two sons Tim (Summer) Tilson and Dale Tilson both of L'Anse, brother Chuck Tilson and sister Ruth Sturgil both of Tennessee, nine grandchildren, Alex, Alisha, Anung, Megon, Mitchell, Leann, Tina, Ricky, and Ronnie.
Preceding him in death are his parents, five brothers and one sister.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 12th at 11:00 a.m. at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Covington. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Rev. John Autio will officiate. Burial will be in the Covington Cemetery. The Baraga County Area Veterans will conduct military rites at the graveside under the direction of the American Legion Post #444. A luncheon will follow at the Bethany Lutheran Church. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is in charge of arrangements.
