Howard J. Byykkonen, age 76 of Baraga passed away on Monday, April 27, 2009 at Cypress Manor in Hancock, MI.
He was born August 28, 1932 in Pelkie, MI son of the late John and Lempi (Koupus) Byykkonen. Howard attended school in Tapiola and was in the US Army during the Korean War. He married the former Stella Kunick. Howard was a miner for over 40 years working in the Republic and Empire Mines. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and going to camp. Howard was a member of the American Legion Post 444 in Baraga.
Surviving are his sons, Paul Byykkonen of Pelkie, James Byykkonen of Baraga; granddaughter Barbie Byykkonen of Baraga; brothers, Harold (Donna) of Chassell, Wesley (Ann) of Hancock, Art (Irene) of Chassell; sisters, Esther Vohto of WI, Ruth (Bob) Maki of Chassell, Sally (Gary) Johnson of Eau Claire, WI, Florence Ketola of IL; numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his wife Stella; brothers Edward, Bob; sisters Nancy Klein, and Elma Eilola.
There will be no visitation or funeral service at this time. The Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse is assisting the family.
