Impie S. Maki

Impie Sylvia Maki, age 90 formerly of Alston passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2002 at Maple Manor Nursing Center in Ontonagon.

She was born April 30, 1912 in Nisula, MI daughter to the late Edward and Elsa (Moilanen) Pirhonen. She attended the local schools and graduated from Houghton High School in 1929. She attended the Marquette Normal School, now Northern Michigan University and taught many years in Laird Township. Impie was married to Aake Maki of Alston in Detroit in 1937, by the late Pastor Jacob Heikkinen formerly of Nisula. After retirement many winters were spent in Lake Worth, Florida.

She was very active in the former Nisula Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sunday school supt. for many years, Secretary of the church council and taught Sunday school for years. Impie was a charter member of Grace Free Lutheran Church of Pelkie, MI, also organist for a few years. She was the member of Women's Missionary Federation and member of Tapiola Senior Center.

Impie is survived by a daughter, Karen Larsen of St. Paul, MN; sons, Howard (Verna) Maki of Alston, James Maki of Marquette; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one sister, Alma Higgins of Sebastian, FL; numerous nephews, nieces, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Aake on June 6, 2000.

The funeral service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 2:00 p.m. at the Grace Free Lutheran Church in Pelkie. Rev. John Voss will officiate. Visitations will be on Saturday from 3-5:00 p.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home, and Sunday one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Alston Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
