Irja E. Lahti

Irja "Irene" E. Lahti, 86, of Bovine, died Saturday afternoon, January 7, 2006, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
She was born February 26, 1919, in Herman, MI, a daughter of the late Matt & Sanna (Tonti) Autio. Irene attended the Herman School. On September 26, 1937 she married Fred J. Lahti and he preceded her in death on April 19, 2003.
Irene worked as a cook for most of her working years and was last employed with Baraga County Memorial Hospital prior to her retirement.
She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2287 in L'Anse and the Order of Eastern Star. Her leisure activities included knitting, crocheting and crafts of all kinds. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and visits to Pt. Abbaye.
Irene is survived by 3 children, Paul F. Lahti of L'Anse, S. Kenneth (Dorothy) Lahti of Albert Lea, Minnesota and Donna M. Lahti of Pt. Abbaye, MI; grandchildren, Kristi Lahti-Johnson (Charles) of Minneapolis, MN, Michael Lahti of Windsor, VT, Christine (James) Collins of L'Anse, Catherine Brunet of Marquette, Thomas (Sue) Brunet of L'Anse and Joan (Fred) Teddy of L'Anse; 9 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lillian (Raymond) Jolgren of Pelkie; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Fred Lahti, she was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Hugo and Elmer Hokkanen; 2 sisters, Ingrid (Ed) Barkow and Edna Autio; and a daughter-in-law, Barbara Lahti.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2005 in the Jacobson Funeral Home where the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Eastern Star will perform funeral rites beginning at 7 p.m. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Scott Williams officiating. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Interment will be in the Herman Cemetery in the spring.
