James Edward Fish

James “Jim” Edward Fish, age 78 of L’Anse, MI passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

He was born August 10, 1940 in L’Anse, MI son of Donald and Isabelle (Johnson) Fish. Jim graduated from L’Anse High School in 1959. At age 16 he went to a Tiger tryout camp that was held in Sault Ste Marie and was the only one selected out of the 95 players that tried out. He went to Lakeland FL for the Tiger Spring Training. He played Triple A ball in the Tiger Stadium, playing 2 innings and struck out 5 with a pitching speed of 94 mph. He ended his career with the Tiger’s when he decided to come back to L’Anse and marry his high school sweat heart, Joanne “Jody” (Van) Fish, they got married on March 26, 1961 in L’Anse.

Jim worked at Celotex until 1977 when he began working with the Carpenters Union as a Millwright, retiring at age 56.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, the Tigers, and 4-wheeling with Crow’s Cronies, He loved being at camp and cooking food. People would stop by and have some laugh’s and leave with a full belly. Jim lived life. He was proud of his grandkids and showed all his kids how to play sports.

Surviving are his sons, Jeff “Gubba” Fish of L’Anse, Jerry (Lisa) Fish, Jay (Beth) Fish all of L’Anse; daughter-in-law Mary “Sissy” (Mattson) Fish of Marquette; Siblings, Donald (Barbara) Fish of Baraga, Jack Fish of L’Anse, Bob (Betty Kay) Fish of Baraga, Sharon (Arnie) Putula of Baraga, Helen “Sugar” (Warren) Tikkinen of L’Anse, Doug Fish of Salt Lake City, UT; grandchildren, Melissa, Logan, Madison, Jerry Jr, Jimmy, Carisa, Abby, and Matt; 7 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents; wife Joanne “Jody”; son Jimbo; and brother Daryl “Tuna” Fish.

Visitation will be on Saturday, April 13th from 12-3 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home. His funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Peter Suomela officiating. A luncheon and fellowship will follow at the American Legion Post 144 in L’Anse. Burial will be in the spring in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Jacobson Funeral Home.
