James William Turunen, age 64 of Skanee, MI passed away on Monday, September 28, 2020 at his home.
He was born April 24, 1956 in L'Anse, MI son of Ralph and Nancy (Mattson) Turunen. Jim graduated from Baraga High School in 1974 and then took forestry courses from Michigan Technology University. He married Lenore "Sue" Ahlsen on September 23, 1978. Jim worked at Captain Ray's grocery store, Holiday Gas Station, Riisku brothers logging, and then as head sawyer for Connors Mill in Baraga before finally becoming the Army National Guard recruiter, for the 107 Engineer Battalion Company A Baraga/Calumet, where he served 27 years.
He enjoyed hunting, riding side by sides and 4-wheelers, apple picking, and camping. Jim was an avid Packer, Tigers, and Nascar fan. He was a social person and enjoyed talking with people and especially veterans.
Surviving are his wife Sue of Skanee; sons, Jeremy Turunen of Negaunee, Kristopher (Brianna Koski) Turunen of North Carolina; brother John (Sue) Turunen of L'Anse; grandchildren Brooks, Hayes, Max; father-in-law and mother-in-law Charles and Sharon Ahlsen; brother-in-law Charles (Roxy Clement) Ahlsen; sister-in-law Sara Ahlsen; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Preceded in death by his parents; son Bradley Turunen; brother, and Robert "Bob" Turunen.
The Baraga County Area Veterans will conduct graveside Military Rites on Saturday, November 7th at 1:00 p.m at the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery. A luncheon and celebration of life will be held at the VFW in L'Anse following the service.
A memorial service and luncheon will be scheduled for a later date. Burial will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
