Janice I. Olsen, age 67 of L'Anse passed away, after a prolonged fight with cancer, on Tuesday, March 02, 2004. She was at home with her family by her side.

She was born November 14, 1936 in Baltimore, Maryland, daughter to the late Charles Walter and B. Jeannette (Harkins) Porter. Janice grew up in Reisterstown, MD and graduated from Franklin High School in 1954. She became a Registered Nurse, after attending Union Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, MD. She later worked at Union Memorial Hospital in the Pediatric Unit as Head Nurse. Other education included two and a half years of study at Ambassador College in Pasadena, CA where she also was a nurse on campus. Janice was a Midwife in California and later in Oregon as well. She married Vernon Olsen on November 22, 1964 in Pasadena, CA. They moved to Medford, Oregon where they resided until moving to L'Anse in 1974. Janice was the bookkeeper for Vern Olsen Tree Service in L'Anse. At one time she was active with the Natural Food CO-OP in L'Anse. She enjoyed gardening, nutrition/natural foods, the outdoors and wildlife, and entertaining for friends and family.

Janice is survived by her husband Vernon of L'Anse; son Eric (Julia) Olsen of Appleton, WI; daughters, Jenny "Jennifer"(Roger) Welch of Maui, HI and Sand River, MI, Edie (Todd) Dauphinais of Marquette; brothers Daniel (Carol) Porter of Reisterstown, MD, Charles "Bud" (Janet) Porter of Glyndon, MD, James (Sharon) Porter of Reisterstown, MD; four grandchildren, Branden Dauphinais, Paul Grafmier, Ahnah Olsen, and Oliver Olsen.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 4, from 5-7:00 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Judy Mattson officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Pequaming Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse is assisting the family.
