Jessie Anne Godfrey, age 88 of Brunswick, ME passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at the Upper Peninsula Health System in Marquette, Michigan.
She was born in Philadelphia, PA., daughter of H. Linwood and Dorothy (Ashbey) Godfrey. A native of Washington, D.C., Jessie received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Wellesley College. From 1958 to 1991 she served as an athletics administrator at Binghamton University (SUNY-Binghamton), Binghamton, N.Y.
Jessie was a pioneer in women's athletics at the local, regional and national levels. She initiated the women's program at Binghamton University and was the primary administrator for women's physical education and athletics for 32 years. She retired in 1991 and lived in Vestal, N.Y. In 2004 she moved to Brunswick, ME.
Music was Jessie's passion. She loved opera and for many years she sang with the Tri-Cities Opera of Binghamton, N.Y. She enjoyed the out-of-doors, the water and her island home in Maine. She was an avid football fan.
Surviving are a cousin Bill(Julie) Ashbey of Ashland, Oregon, several second cousins including Susan Davis of Lancaster, PA; and a special friend Donna Lahti of L'Anse, Michigan.
A memorial celebration will be held in Maine at a later date. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse, MI. is assisting the family.
