Joan Marie Bemis, age 79, of Assinins, MI died on Friday October 16, 2009 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on July 18, 1930 in Assinins, MI daughter to Lawrence and Leone (Lacosse) Denomie. Joan grew up in Assinins and graduated from Baraga High School.; and received a degree from Michigan Technologic University. She married George Bemis in Davenport, Iowa. She worked for the MESC as an interviewer for about 20 years; retiring in 1990. She served on the Commission of Indian Affairs for several years and the KBIC Tribal Council for 16 years. Joan enjoyed goose hunting, fishing, and was an avid Packer Fan.
Joan is a member of Holy Name of Jesus Church, Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, and the Ojibwa Seniors.
Surviving are her son Ralph Bemis of Assinins; brothers Robert (Marilyn) Denomie and Lawrence (Ann) Denomie both of Assinins; sisters, Deloris Eberl and Betty (Gordon) Villwock both of Milwaukee, Carlota (Joe) Beauprey of Assinins; four grandchildren, David Bemis of L'Anse, Nicole (Conrad) LaPlante of Baraga, Ralph (Joanna) Bemis of L'Anse, and James Bemis of Gwinn; 6 great granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents; husband George Bemis in 1992; and sister Patricia Imig.
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 19th from 12-2:00 pm at the Most Holy Name of Jesus Church in Assinins. The funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 pm at the church. Fr. Janusz Romanek will officiate. Burial will be in the Assinins Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is in charge of arrangements.
