JoAnne Reneé Racette (Makade-Gaagaagiw`ikwe), age 64 of L’Anse, MI began her new journey while surrounded by her children, on Sunday, April 9, 2017.
Daughter of Ferdinand “Charles” and Elizabeth “Liz” Genschow; sister of Robert (Gladys) Genschow, Debra Parrish, Darlene Genschow, Garen (Rob) Waterbury, and Kent Kruse. JoAnne is a member of Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and in her youth, she enjoyed playing baseball and bowling.
She graduated from L’Anse High School in 1970 and went on to study at various colleges for graphic design, photography, and later received her teaching certificate.
She married Patrick J. Racette on June 29, 1974 in Zeba, MI. They had four loving children David, Elizabeth (Brian Rantanen), Patrick, and Catherine (Dave Laux). JoAnne enjoyed crafting, bead work, gardening, being by the water, as well as, spending time with grandchildren; Keegan, Lucas, Nizhoni, and Zoongide’.
Beginning at a very early age, inspired by her mother, grandmother Florence, and Great Aunt Lizzie, JoAnne dedicated her journey to sharing her knowledge of Ojibwe language, culture, and crafts in numerous capacities throughout her lifetime. She was currently working for DHS as an Indian Outreach Worker and as a Native Studies Instructor at Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College. She was also an active member of the Ojibwa Senior Citizens.
Walking on before her were her parents; husband Patrick; son David; and sister Sharon Genschow.
Also assisting her on her journey are numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Burial will be held on Thursday, April 13th at 11:00am at the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery, followed by a feast at the Zeba Hall celebrating her life. The Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
