John Sterling Kemppainen

John S. Kemppainen, age 69 of L'Anse, Michigan passed away on Friday, November 15th, 2024 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

He was born October 16th, 1955 in Flint, MI son of Bruce and Shirley (Walitalo) Kemppainen. John grew up near Redford, MI and moved to L'Anse after high school. He worked as a wood shop teacher at Alberta until that closed down, then he was a corrections officer at the Baraga Maximum Correctional Facility. He married Shirley Selden 31 years ago in L'Anse, MI.

John enjoyed decorating for holidays, especially going all out with lights and Christmas decorations. He also enjoyed carpenter work, metal detecting, golfing, and spending time with his grand kids.

Surviving are his wife Shirley Kemppainen of L'Anse; siblings, Jane Kemppainen of Allen park, MI, Robert (Kathy) Kemppainen of South Lyon, MI, Sally (Mike) Huta of Menominee, MI; step children, Wayne (Maxine) Selden of Iron River, MI, Todd Selden of Keweenaw Bay, MI, Tracy (Louis Moilanen) Selden-Pirkola of L'Anse; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents Bruce and Shirley; son Brian Kemppainen, daughter Candice Rajala; sisters, Pam Smith, Kristine Dobson, and Mary Takala.

Per his request, there will be no funeral service. Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
