John William Maki

John W. Maki, age 86 of L'Anse passed away on Friday, December 23, 2005 at the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette.

He was born January 26, 1919 in Chassell, MI son of the late Victor and Katherine (Niemi) Maki. John was resided in L'Anse most of his life. He married the former Lillian "Sonia" Paula Horma on March 14, 1942. He was employed for many years as an operator with CCI. In his earlier years he also did woods work. John was a WWII veteran, having served in the army, and received a Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and European-African-Middle Eastern Service medal with one bronze star. He was a member of the VFW Post 3897 and former Post Commander and a member of the DAV. John was also a former president of the L'Anse Hockey Association and spent countless hours volunteering with children and sports.

Surviving are his wife Lillian "Sonia" Maki residing at the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans; son, Mike (Roberta) Maki of Laurium, MI; daughters, Nancy Eliassen of L'Anse and Karen (Dr. Robert) Lahti of Ontonagon; grandchildren, Amy (Loren) Almli of L'Anse, John Maki of Laurium, Scott Eliassen of Appleton, WI, Kim Eliassen of Marquette, Julie (Jim) Cortright of Houghton, Dawn Miron of Neena, WI; seven great grandchildren, Autumn, Ryan, Kelli, Lexi, Matthew, Christopher and Patrick; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by daughters, Patricia and Kathy; brothers, Paul, Elmer and Jacob; and sisters; Esther, Ruth, Ellen and Lempi.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Jacobson Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. in the funeral home. Following the service the Baraga County Area Veterans will perform military honors. Interment will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery in the spring.
