John "Vern" Strickland, age 83 of L'Anse, passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2002 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 29, 1918 in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, son of the late Joseph and Mamie Strickland. Mr. Strickland grew up on Neebish Island in the Sault, and graduated from Sault Ste. Marie High School.
He married the former Mona Nilsen in 1941 in Pequaming, MI. They lived in Detroit until 1976 when they moved to L'Anse. Mr. Strickland worked for various tool shops in the Detroit area, as well as on the ore boats in the Great Lakes. He attended the L'Anse Baptist Church. His enjoyments were hunting, fishing, and boating.
Mr. Strickland is survived by one son, James Strickland of Roseville, MI; two brothers, George (Evelyn) Strickland of Rose City, MI, and Dana (Ann) Strickland of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; two grandchildren, Kimberly and Shawna; two great grandchildren, Rachel and Rickie.
He is preceded in death by his wife Mona on August 20, 2001, and a brother Paul Strickland.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 2, at 11:00 a.m., at the L'Anse Baptist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Rev. Larry Saunders will officiate. Burial will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery in the Spring. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
