John E. Toivonen, 90, of L'Anse, died Sunday afternoon, April 9, 2006, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital's Skilled Nursing Unit in L'Anse.
He was born March 27, 1916, in Mass City, Michigan, a son of the late Karl and Susanna (Brenforst) Toivonen. John was a graduate of the Mass City High School. On February 11, 1939 he married the former Mildred Liuska in Mass City, MI.
John was employed for several years at Zero Craft in Detroit, MI as a Tool & Dye Maker. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Toivonen of L'Anse; children, John K. (Gerda) Toivonen of Troy, MI, Gary S. (Irene) Toivonen of Troy, MI, Carol (Mike) Paquette of L'Anse and Donna M. Harkonen of Arizona; 7 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 8 siblings.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 13, 2006 at 4:30 p.m. in the Jacobson Funeral Home. Gary Toivonen will be officiating. There will be a time of reflection and meditation for one half hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Nisula Cemetery.
