Kori Beth LaFernier a loving daughter and sister, taken from the world too soon on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at age 21.
Kori was born on August 21, 1997 in Hancock, MI the daughter of Troy and Kristy (Saari) LaFernier. In her short time here, she has touched many lives working multiple jobs from Burger King, Erickson’s True Value, Baraga State Park and finally she found her calling as a CNA at Bayside Village, and in the spring of 2018, she moved to Hancock and continued her CNA journey at Houghton County Medical Care Facility. The residents at Bayside always loved it when she would sneak in Finn her Boston Terrier. She was a very caring, compassionate, hard worker.
Kori was a member of the Zeba United Methodist Church. Kori graduated from L’Anse Area School in 2015. While in attendance she was involved in band, the drama club, Upward Bound, and the L’Anse varsity track team. By the end of her high school career she had logged over 120 hours of community service and received many awards during her time in Upward Bound including student of the year. She also attended Gogebic Community College in pursuit of a business degree.
She was one of a kind, always upbeat and happy, she loved to be on the go tubing, kayaking, fishing, camping, mudding and traveling. She has gone places near and far Canada, Chicago, Washington DC, New York City, and even Pensacola FL.
Kori is survived her parents Troy and Kristy LaFernier of L’Anse; younger siblings Abby, Gracie and Leslie; paternal grandparents Walter and Avis Leinonen of L’Anse; maternal grandparents Richard and Cheryl Saari of Greenland; aunts and uncles Lily and Terry Marcotte of Baraga, Amber Weigel of Cameron NC, Betsey Leinonen of L’Anse, Guy Leinonen of L’Anse, Jennifer and Matt Derke of Madison WI, Kelly and Tony Abfalter of Avon MN, Taylor Saari of Greenland; great great aunt Lena Koupus of L’anse; numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, godparents, friends and coworkers.
She is preceded in death by her grandpa James LaFernier; great grandparents Eugene and Carol DeHut; Edna and Ronald Saari, Laura and Clifford Haataja, Leslie & Mildred LaFernier; and her uncle Dan Wilcox.
Visitation will be on Monday, October 22nd from 5-6 p.m. at the KBIC Zeba Hall. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. at the Zeba Hall with Rev. John Henry officiating. The Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
