Lauri R. Keranen

Lauri R. Keranen, age 89 a life long resident of Alston, passed away on Saturday, December 14, 2002 at the Ontonagon Memorial Hospital, long term care unit.

He was born May 4, 1913 in Alston son of Charles and Anna (Juntunen) Keranen. Lauri worked as a farmer and log sawyer and retired from Isle Royale National Park in 1972. He was active as a musician, playing a string bass in big bands such as the Wolverine Night Hawks; in those led by Rip Anderson, Ernest Tomason, Harry Shepard, and in numerous smaller bands; and lastly with daughter Kristine's country Blues. He was active in ski jumping and baseball and was a charter member of the Alston Ski Club. In his spare time he made string basses and downhill and cross country skies.

Lauri is survived by his daughter, Kristine (Dave) Kasten of Ewen, MI; two grandsons, Jim (Pam) Kantola and Jeff Hautamaki of Peoria, AZ; two great grandsons, Bryan and Jason of Peoria, AZ; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his two sons, Kevin Keranen in 2002 and Delbert Keranen in 1981; grandson Jason; five brothers; and two sisters.

The funeral service for Lauri will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 1:00 p.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Rev. Michael Laakko will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Alston Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
