Lempi Kanniainen, 90, of Covington, died Thursday morning, August 11, 2005 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital's Skilled Nursing Unit, where she had been a patient for the past year.

She was born May 30, 1915, in Ironwood, MI, a daughter of the late Lauri and Edla (Wainappa) Niemela. Lempi was raised in Covington and had lived there most of her life. She was a Kenton High School graduate. Lempi married Toivo Kanniainen in Trout Creek in 1942 and he preceded her in death in 1972.

She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and VFW Post #8945 Auxiliary, both in Covington. Lempi enjoyed sewing, cooking, reading and crossword puzzles.

She is survived by 3 daughters, Marie (Jon) Kauppila of Las Vegas, NV, Elizabeth (Roger) Bennett and Helen (Peter) Rajala, both of Covington; 7 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helmie Johnson of Covington. She was preceded in death by a son, Steven Kanniainen in 1972; grandsons, Mark Rajala and Todd Kauppila; sisters, Josie Niemela and Elma Somero; and brothers, Oscar, Richard, John, Wilho and Eino Niemela.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 15, 2005 at 11 a.m. in the Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse with Rev. Leon Lindquist officiating. Visitation will be held in the funeral home for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Covington Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the SNU Activity Fund at 770 N. Main St., L'Anse, MI 49946.
