Leonard A. Prost, 86, of Baraga, died Saturday morning, March 25, 2006, in Baraga County Memorial Hospital in L'Anse following a short illness.

He was born January 18, 1920, in Nesterville, Ontario, Canada. At an early age he moved to Baraga with his parents, Isaac & Alma (Carlson) Prost. He attended Baraga Schools and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps as a young adult. During WWII, he was in the European Theatre, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and earned a Purple Heart. After the war he worked for the railroad in Chicago, IL.

On October 30, 1948 he married Vivian M. Peterson. Leonard, his wife & young son, William moved to Baraga in 1951 where his family grew to include Michael, Loren & Lee. He worked for Celotex Corp. for many years, retiring in 1985.

Leonard was a Baraga Village Council member, a member of the American Legion, Baraga County Kiwanis Club, Baraga County Historical Society and an active member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. He loved hunting and fishing as well as being an avid Chicago Cubs fan for many years.

Leonard is survived by his wife, Vivian; sons, William (Cindy), Michael (Chris), Loren (Karen), Lee (Linnea); grandchildren, John, Michelle, Lauren and Meghan Prost; step-grandchildren, Jarrod Soli & Jackie Dowling; 2 step-great-grandchildren, Morgan & Nicholas Dowling; also a sister, Francis Van Abel of Marquette; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Part of a large family, he was preceded in death by brothers Theodore, Harvey, Leander and Ralph and sisters, Ellen, Ina and Eileen.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2006 at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Lutheran Church with Pastor Judy Mattson officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service in the church. Interment will be in the Baraga Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions could be made to the Memorial Fund at Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
