Margaret Pauline Stenson, age 101 of L'Anse, MI died Friday, April 10, 2009 at Bayside Village in L'Anse where she had been a resident for the past 4 years.
She was born in Charlotte, MI to Omar and Maggie (Wilcox) Robinson. Pauline began her teaching career at an early age and taught in many varied settings. She met her husband, Carl Thorsten (Thor) Stenson, of Covington while they were both teaching at the Michigan School for the Blind in Lansing. Together they taught Indian children for more than 18 years in Alaska and one year on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. When Thor's health made it impossible for them to continue this work, she earned a masters degree and taught as an associate professor at Pacific Lutheran College in Tacoma, Washington. She ended her teaching career as a reading specialist for the Lansing, MI public schools, before retiring to Bradenton, Florida.
Her hobbies were genealogy and travel. She was the unofficial historian of both the Stenson and Robinson families and kept in contact with hundreds of nieces, nephews and cousins. She traveled extensively in the US and Europe, especially Sweden, visiting many relatives. For many years she enjoyed their cabin on Huron Bay and she chose to return to the Upper Peninsula for her final years.
Pauline was a member of the United Lutheran Church in L'Anse, Order of the Eastern Star, and of many professional organizations.
Her husband Thor, and only sister Irene predeceased her. She leaves no descendants but will be remembered and missed by her larger family and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 14th at 7:00 pm at the Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Rev. Scott Williams will officiate. Burial will take place in the Covington Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
