Mary Joanne (Voss) Dean

Mary Joanne Dean, age 86 of L’Anse, MI passed away suddenly on Monday, January 27, 2020. She was born on May 2, 1933 in Le Mars, IA to Arnold and Martha (Rozenboom) Voss. She graduated from Escanaba High School in 1951. Mary wed Charles Dean, Jr. on August 6, 1953 in Baltimore, MD.


Mary was a homemaker and was passionate about animals. She worked for a time as a dog groomer from home and enjoyed volunteering with the Delta Animal Shelter in Escanaba, MI. Mary regularly donated to veterans programs and charities. She and Charles would say they weren’t “hotel people,” but enjoyed motorcycle and RV camping. They made many friends through their adventures.


Mary is survived by her loving husband, Charles, her son Kevin (Joan) Dean, of L’Anse, MI, and her daughter Laurie Collins, of Brooklyn, NY, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.


Preceding her in death are her parents, brothers Robert and Dave Friets, and her daughter Valerie Wunder.


Interment will take place at Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Escanaba, MI. Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
