Mary Lucille LaTendresse, age 98 of Baraga passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2002 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital, skilled nursing unit, where she has been a resident since February 2000.
She was born April 10, 1904 in Keweenaw Bay, daughter of Daniel and Minnie (Newton) Lawler. Lucille attended Keweenaw Bay area schools and graduated from Baraga High School in 1923 and went on to graduate from college in Marquette with a teaching degree. She also attended colleges in Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor. She started to teach when she was 20 years old in Baraga and taught for 45 years and retired at the age of 65. She then went on to substitute teach at the Sacred Heart Catholic School in L'Anse for a couple of years.
Lucille married Joseph LaTendresse on January 14, 1950 at St. Ann's Parish in Baraga. She also worked for her husband's business doing book keeping. Her hobbies include tatting, oil painting, playing hymns and Marches on the piano, working crossword puzzles, and playing cards. She loves children and animals. Lucille was an active member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Baraga, and belonged to the Lady Foresters, Altar Society, Third Order of St. Francis and the Retired Teachers Association.
Lucille is survived by three stepchildren; Nancy LaTendresse of Ann Arbor, MI, Geraldine Blackney of Saginaw, MI, Joseph (Nancy) LaTendresse Jr. of San Diego, CA, two step grandchildren, John LaTendresse and Allison LaTendresse; three sister-in-laws, Eva (Lester) Miron of Baraga, Mary Aho of Traverse City, Elizabeth Shelton of North Balm Beach, FL; God child Christine Uren of Montana; and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband Joseph on May 13, 1991; brothers John Lawler, and three brothers at birth; and a sister, Sister Mary Seina Lawler
The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 13, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Fr. George Joseph will officiate. Burial will be in the Baraga Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
