Mary M. (Turpeinen) Peterson, age 73 of Alston, MI passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital in L’Anse with her family at her side following a lengthy illness.
Mary was born May 22, 1946 in L’Anse, MI to Willard and Mae (Wiiki) Turpeinen. She attended the Laird School and graduated from Baraga High School in 1964. Mary married Clyde Peterson on December 5, 1964 in Nisula. They shared 54 years of marriage doing everything together.
Her love of horses was a lifetime. In 4-H she enjoyed many animals and at the age of 12 her father bought her a horse. She enjoyed operating Rolling Acres Horse Ranch with her mom in early years. She also worked as a truck driver for various contractors in the area. Her interests included 4-wheeling, their white German Shepherds, her birds, fishing, knitting, baking and decorating cakes. She found her most joy in her grandchildren who were her pride and joy. For many years Mary cared for her mother, so she could live independently at home. Mary worked for the Dept. of Corrections in Kincheloe and later retiring from the MDOC in Baraga in 2003.
Mary is survived by her husband Clyde of Alston; son Jim (Erin) Peterson of Pelkie; grandchildren, Jason, Erika, and Hannah; great-grandson Kane; brothers Bill (Grace) Turpeinen and Tom Turpeinen both of Alston; sister Susie (Bob) Zyza of California; sisters-in-law Janet Tolonen and Shirley Turpeinen both of Alston; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and life-long friend Anita McEwen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Bob, Pete, Dave, and Henry; her mother-in-law and father-in-law Ann and Jim Peterson.
Visitation will be on Friday, May 3rd from 2-3:30 p.m. at Mission United Lutheran Church. The funeral service will be at 3:30 p.m. with Rev. Kellan Weyer officiating. Burial will be in the Alston Cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the church hall. Arrangements have been entrusted to Jacobson Funeral Home.
