Mayme Marie Maki, age 79, formerly of Baraga and L’Anse and for the past two years a resident at Rolling Meadows Assisted Living in Covington, where she passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2015.

She was born on May 26, 1936, the youngest of nine children, to Finnish parents Henry Emil and Lempi Marie (Saari) Maki.  Mayme, who was born with Down Syndrome, lived independently for nearly 40 years after her mother passed away.  How she loved her independence and managed better than anyone expected, with the help of family and a host of caring friends and neighbors, whom she dearly loved.  She enjoyed listening to music, watching cooking shows on TV, and loved to sing and dance in her younger years.  She loved socializing and could hardly contain her exuberance when she received visitors.

For a time she worked at Copper Country Mental Health in L’Anse, where she took great pride in having a job, volunteered at the St. Vincent DePaul Store and for many years worked part-time at the Reliance Agency, a job she loved and spoke so highly of her employers.

Mayme is survived by her sister, Esther Bidstrup of Petoskey, sister-in-law Elsie Maki of North Palm Beach and several nieces and nephews and their families.  Preceding her in death were her parents, her step father Alfred Schultz, sisters Caroline Michaelson, Helen Johnson, brothers Weikko, Theodore, Leonard, Milton and Donald Maki and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.  The Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
