Miles David Sirard, age 73 of L'Anse, MI passed away on Wednesday, September 17th, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family, following a long battle with cancer.
He was born June 28, 1941 in L'Anse, MI son of Joseph and Lou (Elmblad) Sirard. He was raised in L'Anse and on the family farm in Baraga where he helped milk cows and other farm work. Miles graduated from L'Anse High School in 1960. He attended Stout State in Wisconsin for 1 year then from 1962-64 he was in the US Army; a paratrooper with the 82nd airborne. Then received an Associate Degree in mechanical engineering from MTU in 1965.
Miles along with his 5 brothers continued the family tradition of making maple syrup, that started in the 1800's by his grandfather.
Miles was an automotive design engineer for the auto industry for over 40 years. He worked as an independent contractor, living near Royal Oak, MI. He worked for Lear Corporation for 12 years prior to retiring in 2001, when he moved back to L'Anse.
He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Miles enjoyed hunting and brook trout fishing in his secret streams. He also loved to have family dinners.
Surviving are his brothers Al (Barbara) Sirard, Joseph (Betty) Sirard, Jerry (Mary) Sirard all of L'Anse, Ed Sirard of Baraga; sister Annette Schaefer of Dollar Bay; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Preceding him in death are his brother Roger Sirard and sister Emmy Lou (Paul "Porky") Roy.
Visitation was on Monday, September 22nd from 7-9:00 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home. Baraga County Area Veterans conducted military rites at 8:00 p.m. under the direction of American Legion Post 444. Deacon John Cadeau recited parish prayers at 8:30 p.m. Miles funeral mass was held on Tuesday, September 23rd at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church with Fr. Corey Litzner officiating. Burial is in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery. A luncheon followed in the church hall.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy memorials may be made to The Omega House, 2211 Maureen Ln, Houghton, MI 49931. The Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
