Mona C. Strickland
April 29, 1917 — August 20, 2001
Mona C. Strickland, age 84 of L'Anse passed away on Monday, August 20, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital in the skilled nurse unit.
She was born on April 29, 1917 in Pequaming, MI, daughter to Edward and Vendla (Gustafson) Nilsen. She was raised in Pequaming and L'Anse and graduated from L'Anse High School, and Northern Michigan University, school of Nursing. She married John "Vern" Strickland in 1941 in Pequaming. They lived in Detroit, and she worked in Administration at Lincoln Hospital. In 1976 she retired and they moved back to L'Anse.
Mona was active with the L'Anse Baptist Church and work chairman of the Ladies Missionary Group. She was the secretary for Aura Hospital Auxiliary for 20 years, and a member of the BCMH auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening, she loved her dogs, and was a good cook.
She is survived by her husband, Vern of L'Anse; son James Strickland of Roseville, MI; and two granddaughters, Kimberly and Shawna.
Mona was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Arne Nilsen.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 22, at 11:00 a.m. at the L'Anse Baptist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Rev. Larry Saunders will officiate. Burial will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
